Grinding up what remains of a tree is very important for a few different reasons…

Tree stumps can serve as a home for unwanted pests
No matter how old the stump is, it welcomes termites, rodents, and fungi. Creatures of all sizes can use the tree stump in your yard as a home, and unfortunately the worst ones that appear are the ones you can’t see until they’ve done plenty of damage. Even if the tree was originally healthy, leaving an exposed tree stump around can host disease and risk the spread of such infection. Grinding the stump a few inches below ground level can prevent further spread of disease.
A hindrance to your property
Regardless if you hire someone, or mow the lawn yourself, having a tree stump in the way is an inconvenience that can ruin the blades of your lawn mower. A stump also takes up space, making that specific area of your yard unusable. From small children to seniors a tree stump is a massive trip hazard that can cause accidents; which means no more backyard football.
Prevent unwanted growth
When left alone, a tree stump can begin to grow again. It won’t happen overnight, but certain species of trees can sprout again mainly around the outer edge of the stump or exposed roots. Grinding the stump will prevent unwanted growth of any new or preexisting vegetation.
